After Phillip left, Taylor arrived the next week. She came on Saturday, April 4th, and on the 5th we went to see The Little Mermaid on Broadway. I think I was MUCH more excited than she was to see it. It was my first Broadway show and I loved it. She loved it too, but not quite as much as I thought she would. I think she just doesn't realize yet just how cool it is to go to a show on Broadway. Although, maybe she never will if we contine living here... It was pretty rainy and cool most of the week when she was here, so we weren't able to go to the zoo, parks, and other places that I wanted to bring her. We were able to go to Wilmington, Delaware to see Sue (a friend from Neiman's in Dallas) and her kids for the day. It was only about a 2 hour drive, and after playing with them for a while at their house, we went to a Farmer's Market that had hay rides, the Easter Bunny, a big playground, and a pettying zoo in Pennsylvania. Taylor had a great time with Lauren and Jordan and Merrick had fun being boys and playing in the dirt when we were at the petting zoo.
My mom came to see us the day before Easter, and we had a great time with her. We watched movies, colored Easter eggs, and on Easter had an egg hunt (which Taylor of course dominated, I had to help Merrick to make it fair) and made a big Easter lunch. Taylor was scheduled to leave in the evening on Easter Sunday. Before leaving for the airport, we checked her flight, which was already delayed an hour. Once we got to the airport, it was delayed even more, and they were doubtful that it would take off at all that night. After waiting for a while to see if anything would change, we decided that we would just put Taylor on a flight the next day. So, we spent most of the day on Monday at the airport as well. She took off on time, and my mom and spent the rest of the day driving around Westchester and went to dinner. She left the following day. This was the week that I went to the airport 5 times in one week. It was the most I have driven since we moved here!
After Taylor left, Megan came from Moscow the following Friday. We had a great week together!!! We went to Wicked (now my 2nd Broadway show!!), did plenty of shopping, ate and made some yummy TexMex food, and were finally able to spend some time outside with the arrival of some nice weather.
After Megan left, life really got interesting! I decided that it was time to start potty training. Now, I never really potty trained Taylor. She was in day care full time when she was that age, and they did most of the work for me. My biggest challenge was night time, and when to stop wearing pull ups at night. Merrick needs to be potty trained before he starts preschool in September, and May is the least busy month that we have before then. I thought this would be a perfect time to spend some time at home and start potty training! Well, Merrick though differently. By the second day, when I almost started yelling at him to stay on the potty, and numerous accidents, I put him right back in a diaper and quit for the day, and that turned into quitting for the week. I was ready to go back to work after that, and was feeling really depressed (not just because of the potty training.) Burke and I really haven't made friends here yet. We know couple that Burke knew before we moved here that we have been out with a couple time, and they are great, but they live an hour away. We need to meet people nearby that we can get together with on the weekends, and I really need a playgroup for Merrick. That week that we were potty training, it was also raining a lot, so even after we quit, we were stuck in the house and both of us were getting frustrated! For the next couple weeks, Merrick refused to go to the bathroom on the potty!
Burke's mom came to visit us over Mother's Day. Last Saturday we went to Phantom of the Opera for our Mother's Day gift. It was the best Broadway show I have seen (in my vast experience of THREE shows!) We had a great time! On Mother's Day we went to a nearby park and had a picnic and Merrick played and rode around his scooter. All weekend, Nancy was asking Merrick if he needed to go on the potty. We told him that he couldn't go to school until his diapers were all gone. He still wasn't interested in the potty, but he is getting really excited about going to school. Nancy left yesterday, and last night Merrick decided that he didn't want to wear a diaper. He took it off and a couple accident free hours later he went into the bathroom all by himself and we went potty!!! I gave him an M&M for going potty, and we were both really excited! He went potty again about 15 mintues later, and then another 10-15 min later, and then again, and again, and again. Of course, he was expecting an M&M each time. He tried to go potty one last time before going to bed, and I officially decided that other than at night when he is sleeping, the diapers are gone!!! This morning Merrick has been going potty on the toilet all morning and even did a number 2!!!! We are very very excited. The diapers are gone!!! I am sure when all my excitement is gone I will be sad that we don't have kids in diapers anymore....then again, maybe not!
Up next is a (driving) trip to Minnesota in a couple weeks to get Taylor, see family and friends, and go to a friend's baby shower. She is finally coming back to live with us for the summer and will start school here in September. Burke is going to Moscow next week for work and Phillip will be here on June 6th. We will be back from MN on June 8th (my B-Day!) and then have friends from TX visiting us for a couple weeks and we plan to go to Niagra Falls and doing plenty of sight seeing around NYC (which I have not done yet.) It will be a busy busy summer!
